Sustainable harvest on our reefs - what do we know?

I have been wondering which coral are in plenty on the reef (for eg. I have heard that Xenia has periods of the year where it is in 'fields') and which is less common. Does anyone else ever wonder this when choosing what corals they want to keep? I would love to know this information. Where can I find out?
