No your were originally correct :)

My overflow pipes enter into the right hand end chamber, then overflow onto the filter sock plate which is about 10mm higher than the water level in the remainder of the sump - so, the water does drop down through the filter socks.

How have you connected the pipework coming out of the overflow box? It doesn't look like you've used bulkheads.

Yes, I have used bulkheads - they were with the tank when I purchased it - they are a clear blue colour similar to this
