Uv Sterilizer
Hi,
we have been debating the pro's and con's of using a UV Sterilizer on my tank for months.
Many of those sold on the average LFS are pretty mickey mouse, and as a result show very limited results.
I have come around to think maybe it is advisable to have on in the system.
Question - are they effective and worth the cost and effort ? If so, what would be the correct spec of unit I should be looking at, and is there someone in Australia who has experience applying them to marine aquariums ?

They will help but are not a silver bullet. For a tank your size, you will either need a commercial sized unit or will need to daisy chain several smaller units together (which is all that most commercial units are)

Prepare to spend a few bucks....

Eastwood Aquarium in Sydney use them on all their systems and have for many years.

All of the inhabitants in all of their systems are in prefect health. Obviously, this can't be simply put down down to using uv, but the uv effect certainly isn't hurting.

Only a week or so ago, I recently purchased a uv steriliser from Sam and Sunnie at Eastwood. I purchased it to help ward off parasites since I also purchased an Achilles Tang from them at the same time.

The uv for me is a bit of peace of mind, now that I have an Achilles swimmimg around.

Thanks guys,
I will give Eastwood a call and see if i can get more info on what size unit would be applicable and costs.
The blue Tang has been eating well, and the white spots have definitely reduced substantially, but it scared me enough to re-visit the UV topic.
thanks

A cheaper option for proof of concept if you didn't want to go out and get a deltec/wiegandt/de bary straight up

http://www.masa.asn.au/phpBB3/buysell/single_ad.php?ad_id=38161

Should be about the right size, contact time needs to be around 2 seconds so you may not be able to put all of your flow through it.

Looking around you can get it cheaper brand new from Andries

You could probably look at picking it up off him for something like $150 then

I am a member of masa, but never get to use it much now - clearly I should :-)
Set him a message to get some images of his UV .
Who is Andries ? went to the link for Aquariumonline - great selection. Will wait for reply of the masa guy.
Received my MH reflectors today =- will post a separate post under LIGHTS.

Andries runs aquarium online suppliers, he used to run guppies aquarium products.

Some people have strong feelings about him and have had run-ins with him, he has always treated me well though.
