cranky acan?
gday reefers :D

just looking for a couple of opinions. the other day I picked up this acan for a reasonable price, it had a heap of heads on it and was looking how it was supposed to. it did stay in the bag for a couple of hours as it was a fairly long road trip to see my specialist. I figured surely it couldnt have been the trip as it was in a styro box and the whole day was relativly cool.
once home I acclimatised the temps etc. and salinity over about a 1-2 hours. it hasnt expanded at all since being in my tank, tentacles dont even look like coming out. yesterday I noticed a few of the heads decided to spit out a brown mucous (I am assuming it was zoxanthellae? ) and whats left looks like this

lots of heads still have plenty of zoxanthellae but a fair few dont either.

I know you are all going to say give it some time. its just bugging me as my hammer and elegance are fine and dandy, full extension and not lookin back.

any thoughts?

thats blasto mate! not an acan :D a few hours in a bag will never make a coral happy, by polyp extension what do you mean? blastos usually look like that! they do look a little withdrawn but nothing to worry about give it a few weeks and see how it go's from there

polyp extension??? you mean when I said tentacle extension?

yea, they seem to be more withdran then when they were bought. the heads that arent bright green I dont think are gonna come back, they seem heavily withdrawn.

will give it some time :)

Pretty sure you'll find it's neither Acanthastrea nor Blastomussa, Greenie ;) yes, the brown more than likely was Zooxanthellae bailing out; being that it was in the box for a sustained period of time and it's only newly introduced to the tank, it's either undergone degradation during the shipping process (poor packing would cause it because of that sustained layover), or, it's not been acclimated to your system properly.

It's not in a healthy state that it's missing half the heads from the colony, best you can do for now is just try and give it the most healthy environment you can. Keep your conditions stable, in time it may come back.

If my eyes aren't deceiving me (which they may be, opiates are awesome), it's some kind of Caulastrea - possibly C. furcata.

I dont know about it being Caulastrea furcata. the heads on this one are around 8mm diameter.. it doesnt look like the candy cane I had either, I know ID can be rather dificult though.

anyways. will see what happens. I am ontop of the tank now. and its as stable as I can be sure of.
